Pink and Nude Lippies Dominate Lakme Fashion Week 2008

Sorry it's taken so long for us to update ya'll, we've been bogged down with responsibilities at work and home lately. You know how it goes, you gotta take care of the needs of the people in your real world before you can play in the blogosphere. In addition to just being too busy to write, I've gotta admit, I hadn't found something worth writing about lately. I mean, I love lipstick and beauty products like any other girl, but coming up with something new to rant about on a regular basis is hard. That is, until the pictures from Lakme Fashion Week 2008 came out on Santa Banta. Sometimes all it takes is a picture of Gauri Khan' s slick face to get you back in the swing of things, so here goes:

It seems the dominant lipstick color during fashion week was baby pink, complemented by shades of taupe, and nude beige, and on some of the runway models, cranberry red. Here's what some of our favorite Bollywood stars were wearing:

I love Vidya Balan, she always looks polished without overdoing her makeup. Here she's got a classic look of black liner on top, subtle peach toned cheeks and pink lips. Pink is a natural complement to the green she's wearing as well. I'm not quite sure exactly what color she is wearing on her lips, but it looks like something from Bobbi Brown's Pink Satin Collection.

Oh Rani, Rani, Rani, looking amazing as always. I love both the makeup and the outfit, especially the belt. That's a good trick to keep in mind, especially if you're top heavy like Rani, to use belts or fitted waists to show off your figure. Many times top heavy girls look either like they gained weight or are pregnant in the baby doll/flouncy tops that are in right now. Using a belt lets people know, without saying a word, that you're not fat, you just have a nice rack. :)

Anyway, I digress, this subtle makeup look on Rani is one I normally do for myself on a daily basis. The blush is MAC Blush Baby and the lipstick is most definitely MAC Pink Apertif with Plum lipliner (my favorite combo, especially for summer). Top it off with MAC lipglass in Viva Glam V for extra shimmer.

Are these two still denying that they're married? They look so married here. Know how I can tell? Saif's letting himself go with that nasty Hulk Hogan mustache and Black Sabbath t-shirt. Men often start grunging it once they've got the girl, or so I've noticed.

Kareena is still looking hot though, and I love the orange dress with the belt and pink lipstick. Her lipstick looks like Chanel Glossimer in Jaipur mixed with a rosey lipliner like Vasanti Thames or Bobbi Brown Pale Pink lipliner.

Another winning combo by Urmila. The lipstick is more of a peachy pink than true pink. To get her lip look, use MAC Spice Lipliner with NARS Dolce Vita lipstick, and then top it off with NARS Turkish Delight lipgloss. Sounds like alot of products to get one lipcolor, I know, but many times it takes a mix of colors to get that perfect shade. (NOTE: If the Spice lipliner washes you out, try using the lipstick and gloss combo with MAC Half-Red lipliner, the resulting color is a beautiful color, kind of like the fish roe on sushi, and looks awesome on dark skin.)

Kohl lined eyes and nude lips seems to be Kajol's signature look, she seems to wear it all the time. To get simple nude lips like Kajol's, especially if you're dark skinned like her, I recommend using just one product, Stila Lip Glaze in Mocha. Just swipe it on, and you're ready. If you want to add slightly more oompf to the color, line it with Vasanti lip pencil in Nile (MAC Subculture lip pencil would work too.)

As usual, we saved the bad one for last. We love Gauri Khan, but seriously, she needs to fire her makeup artist already. The last two times we've seen her she's had nothing but disastrous makeup going on. First it was the Pepto Bismol lipstick at Filmfare, now at Lakme, she's got an oil spill on her face. Blotting papers, girls with oily skin must never leave the house without blotting papers. They're so cheap, about $5 for a pack of 50 at CVS, you have no reason not to have these on hand, especially if you're going to an event. Adding more face powder in the middle of an oil breakout makes the problem worse, using blotting papers to absorb the oil first and then touching-up with powder provides a better finish. As for her makeup, it seems too neutral for a black dress. I would have liked to see a touch of gloss, like the new Viva Glam VI lipglass, to add a little more shimmer to her look.

  1. I love Kareena's lip colours! Gauri Khan's definitely got the chipmunk cheek implants, she looks oily usually, why doesn't she use fewer products on her face? Seriously!

  2. you know I was thinking the same thing about her cheeks, they look like implants. yuk! Don't know why anyone would ever want to get those put in their face. The only time I saw her with good makeup was in the end credits of OSO.

  3. Can you please clarify the name of the lipstick Rani is wearing. I really like it and looked for 'Pink Apertif' on the Mac website but could not find it. Thanks!

  4. hmm that's odd they don't have it on their site, I wonder if it's discontinued? It was there at the Macy's counter I went to last week.

But, don't worry, the new MAC Viva Glam VI is a close shade as well. just be sure to line with Plum lipliner because that really helps define this color on desi skin.

  5. Also, Sonya, try MAC lipglass in Posh it Up on top of Plum lipliner, that also is a good match to the color. Another option is Bobbi Brown lipgloss in Rose Sugar. Hope that helps. :)

  9. Hi Monika - One of the other reader above had the same question - I believe Pink Apertif was limited edition color. Chic Mommy suggested MAC Viva Glam VI, MAC lipglass in Posh it Up on top of Plum lipliner, or Bobbi Brown lipgloss in Rose Sugar. Hope that helps!
