Roop ki Rani: Ujjwala Raut

Ujjwala Raut is one of the few Indian models who has graced the runways in both India as well as New York, Paris and Milan, solidifying her status as a truly international model. She won the Femina Look of the Year in the Miss India Pageant in 1996 and was among the Top 15 finalists in the Elite Model Look of the Year contest.

Ujjwala has walked for fashion shows such as Yves Saint Laurent, Roberto Cavalli, Hugo Boss, Cynthia Rowley, Diane von Furstenberg, Dolce & Gabanna, Betsey Johnson, Gucci, Valentino, Oscar de la Renta and Emilio Pucci. She also has walked at the annual Victoria's Secret fashion show.

Ujjwala has been the face of ads of Dolce & Gabbana, Gap, H&M and Roberto Cavalli. In 2004, Ujjwala was the face of Yves Saint Laurent cosmetics, probably the first South Asian model to be the face of a major cosmetics company.

Ujjwala has been on a number of magazine covers such as those of Elle India and Femina India. And I remember when I saw Ujjwala in an editorial in U.S. Marie Claire a few years back - definitely very cool!!

Ujjwala took a short hiatus from the runway to start a family but it seems like she might be back to the runways!! She modeled for Spring 2009 shows like Gottex and at Lakme India Fashion Week for the Autumn/Winter 2009 shows.

Check out this video interview of Ujjwala on modeling from Ripe TV - it has some great clips of her on the runway.

I tried posting a slideshow of Ujjwala's pics on here but it didn't work out so well, so below are more photos:

  5. Fab post! I was wondering if you knew of any product/ powder that you could dust onto your face after you finish your makeup that would keep shininess at bay...any recommendations? I have a few weddings to attend and b/w all the drinking and dancing my face turns into an oil slick. Any advice would be appreciated!

  6. Hey Ranjani! How was your trip?! Did you see my recent post on preventing oiliness - http://roopcafe.blogspot.com/2009/05/if-youre-shiny-and-you-know-it-blot.html.

So normally, I would tell you to use blotting papers but since these are weddings you're going to where you'll be taking lots of photos no doubt, my advice is to carry the blotting powder with you and blot when necessary to cut the shine. I really like the MAC Blot Powder - check it out and see what you think. Also, try NOT to put on a ton of foundation and concealer on because once you start to sweat all that makeup will come sliding off and then you'll be caking the blot powder on top of that.

You have great skin anyways so start with a little concealer and a loose powder all over to start. Then as the night wears on, apply the blot powder.

    Hope that helps!

  7. Thanks so much! Yeah I had an awesome trip and should probably update my blog soon too!
Just read you post on shininess :) Think I'm off to check out the new BB pot, looks sooo pretty! and I think it's a really neat idea to use the Ysl touche eclat to prep your lids, I'm trying it next time.
Would you recommend a primer before I use a foundation btw? I almost never wear foundation...but I think it's an event that warrants makeup!

    Sorry for rambling on..!!

  8. R - I have mixed views on primers. To be honest, I'm not an expert on foundation primers b/c I only wear concealer, not foundation. However, I've done some of my own reading of foundation primers and I keep hearing about how even the most popular ones like the one from Smashbox and MAC Prep + Prime break people out. For that reason alone, I would say no, don't use a primer if you have any tendency to break out (like I do). Also, if you don't use foundation regularly, I wouldn't go out and buy a primer just for one event.

My advice would be to apply a thin veil of foundation and a little powder on top to start and then touch up lightly as the night goes on. Do up your eyes, cheeks, lips though. For Indian weddings, I've noticed that the less face makeup I wear, the BETTER I look in pics even those taken at midnight because I haven't sweated it all off and it doesn't look all greasy!
